Q: I’ve got an Apple TV and I really want to hack into it to get its full potential. Do you have any suggestions?

A: Oh, totally! I saw this one – it was awesome! You crack the thing open with a screwdriver, take all the innards out, and you use it to store knick-knacks!

Q: Knick-knacks?

A: Yeah! String, rubber bands, the feet that fell off your Pismo…

Q: Uh… not that I don’t need a place to keep my Pismo feet, but that’s a little low-tech. See, I was more thinking of turning it into a multimedia…

A: Oh! Oh! There’s this other one where you really carefully tape it off and then you get some model paint and… and… and… and… uh… you paint it.

Q: Huh.

A: Uh… yeah. You can do blue or red or… well, I guess any color.

Q: Right. See, I was thinking I could use it to play other kinds of media and…

A: Fish tank!

Q: Forget it.

A: Oh, it’s good enough for Andy Ihnatko but it’s not good enough for you?

Q: Hey, speaking of fish tanks, I tried that whole conversion on my SE and you know what? It’s a scam!

A: A scam?

Q: Yeah! You can’t use it as a computer anymore!

A: Uh, well, yeah. Because it’s full of water.

Q: I know! What kind of bullshit is that?!

A: Um… what?

Q: Oh, and I electrocuted my fish.

A: [sigh]

Q: OK, OK, don’t let that one get you down because I’ve got the total pick-me-up question.

A: Awesome. Lay it on me.

Q: I’ve got six words for you. Boba. Fett. Mac. Pro. Case. Mod.

A:

Q: You’re speechless.

A: I’m just wondering what’s wrong with my life that I want to drop everything and spend my weekend working on that.

Q: Oh, man, don’t think of it that way! This could be the best Mac ever!

A: Oh, it will. With god as my witness… the Boba Fett Mac Pro will be the best Mac ever.

Q: Yes! I’m coming over!

  1. Nice tip on the aquarium thing. I was thinking of doing that mod on my iPod mini. But I didn’t know that then it no longer works.

You probably saved me some frustration on that one. Thanks CARS!

  2. I modded my G5 tower by grating cheese with it.

Wait. No, I guess it was the block of cheese that got modded. My Mac is about the same as it was before.

  3. You know… It’s funny. I have a Pismo with missing feet.

    um…

    what?

I’m sorry. I’ve been informed that the previous statement was NOT funny.
    My apologies.

I still have a Pismo with missing feet, though.

  4. I use my MacBook as a table-mat. It is a little melted on the top, the Apple is not so translucid, but my table is still awesome.

  5. Oh, I could totally do with Pismo feet right about now. I guess I’ll have to make do with fourteen.

Hmm, I’m having regrets though. I think that would have looked punchier if I had used italics on the word fourteen. And just imagine if I’d used them on punchier!

  6. The Boba Fett Mac Pro would go great with my Millennium Falcon power mac.

    Oh yeah, you know it.

    Fifteen

  7. When someone comes up with a “Boxy from the original BSG” case-mod, I am so outta here!

Just because a thing can be done, doesn’t make it a good idea.

  8. My Pismo lost its feet a LONG time ago. I replaced them with slightly taller stick-on half-spheres that you use to keep picture frames from scratching the wall. Had the side effect of better airflow underneath, too!

Does that count as a mod?

Oh, and twenty-two, for another hyphen.

  9. I once got a PowerBook given to me that had its screen broken off and the temperature sensor was bad on the motherboard. I figured I could still use it as a desktop computer if I hooked it to a monitor. I still had to keep it from overheating.

So, since the USB ports carry power I wired the CPU fan to a USB cable that I passed out one of the hole left by the broken screen hinge to one of the USB ports. I also attached a rheostat so I could manually adjust the fan speed and mounted it in one of the holes left open on the back of the PowerBook. My only Mac Mod, but it still works.

  10. About that SE to fishtank mod, if you’re electrocuting your fish you did it wrong. You were supposed to restrict the power flow so that the electricity only excited the fish, ensuring they were swimming when you were watching. Turn it off and the fish can resume whatever fish normally do – uh, I guess that’s swim.

It’s kind of a pointless option I know, but it’s pretty neat when you hit that power button for your friends and they get to see your fish swimming twice as fast as normal!
