Apple Releases Vintage OS Collection.

In the run-up to Leopard’s release, Apple announced today that it is releasing a 9-DVD collection of the company’s greatest operating system hits.

CEO Steve Jobs said “Yes, they’re all there! Tiger, Puma, OS 7.5, System Software 6.0.2, all those wonderful operating systems of yesteryear!”

Appearing from behind a curtain, senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller said “That’s right, Steve! You get Jaguar, OS 8.6, System 7.1.1 and even System Software 6.0.6, which was only previously only released as an embedded part of the ROM of the Macintosh Classic!

“But don’t answer yet!” Jobs shouted. “If you act now, I’ll throw in a special bonus DVD with all the NeXT operating system releases! Whatever those were! Frankly, I can’t for the life of me remember!”

“Well, hoooold on a minute, Steve!” Schiller said. “Because I’ve got a box of 5 and 1/4 inch floppies with, uh, I dunno… maybe some Apple II crap on it. Hard to tell. But I’ll throw these in absolutely free!

“Phil,” Jobs said, “You’re craaaaaaazy!

Apple then asked how much you’d expect to pay for a fabulous collection of operating systems such as this. $300? $400? $500?

“Well, how about $79.99!” Jobs hollered, now standing about three inches from reporters’ faces.

Reporters nodded mutely to indicate their agreement that this indeed would be a good deal.

The offer will be made exclusively on late-night TV through the fine people at Sessions.

  1. ProDOS? Yaaaaay!! That’s my favorite!

Wait — where’s SOS (the Sophisticated Operating System) for the Apple ///? That’s my favorite, too!

  2. Forget it, no deal. I want Ginsu knives thrown in absolutely free or I’m walking. Even if I do call before midnight tonight!

But then again… System 7.5.4… That is a collectors edition. I think the label had a hologram on it or something.

Oh hell, it’s only 11:34, I have time to think this over, right?

  3. And ti use it, are we to be dressed like Mr Jods was at that time, bow-tie and all ?
At last some geek elegance to glance to…

  4. Really sucks that a Spam Bot took one of the top 10 positions.

I never had that problem under System 7.

  5. So will they offer them as downloads on iTunes? Probably have to buy the whole album, and they’ll have DRM…

  6. Mac OS X 10.0 (Cheetah)
    Mac OS X 10.1 (Puma)
    Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar)
    Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)
    Mac OS X 10.4 (Bobcat)
    Mac OS X 10.5 (Spot)
    Mac OS X 10.6 (kittykitty)
    Mac OS X 10.7 (Ginger)
Mac OS X 10.8 (Jaguar, oops, did that already)
    Mac OS X 10.9 (Ringo)
    Mac OS X 10.10 (Felix)
    Mac OS X 10.11 (Sylvester)

  7. Re #2: I miss ProDOS too… 🙁

And the classic Apple ][ games like ChopLifter and the original Lode Runner.

Do the 5 and 1/4 inch floppies come double-sided, or so I have to locate my hole punch?

  8. Just in time. I’ll need more options since 10.5 isn’t compatible with Filemaker. Thanks jerkoffs

  9. Oh, geez. No Windows versions? I need a few Windows versions, especially 3.1 and 95. I have couple of big holes in the drywall, from getting all excited and kicking when I found out my copy of Leopard shipped. I’m thinking Win 95 and spackle will fix on of them. 3.1 for the other.

    Pass.

  10. Hmmm. Not really interested in the whole collection, but is there any way I can just download that Peart solo for 79p?

  11. Just last month I threw away a few floppies containing my OpenTransport backups. Was that for System 7.5.5? Mmmmmmm, memories.
I actually thought about reformatting them so no one would try to steal my data and thought of three problems with that.
First, all the trashers are outside houses of celebs, not mine.
Second, and maybe least important, I don’t care if someone steals OT.
Third, I haven’t even seen a floppy drive in the last 4 years. Have they all self-destructed yet?

  12. I guess I missed out a bit, I only remember back to system 6, but I did forget a lot of other stuff from the 80’s, t

  13. I remember reading up on System 4 in high school! We had these old macs, with the MIDI interfaces, and CD drives, and they were SO COOL!

Yeah, brings back memories. Then we bought a G5, and it just wasn’t the same.

With this collection, I could get my army of older macs back up and running! Woo! Gonna take over the PC world! One outperforming Performa at a time!

  14. Hey, what about system 7.1• — remember that one? It was an update that didn’t advance the number, just added a bullet.

  15. The Mac Classic ROM easter egg was System 6.0.3 and Finder 6.1, man. Jeez you people need to get a life.
