  1. I’ve been volunteered to be the “early adopter” of lion at work. My biggest fear is Connected Backup doesn’t work on it. So other then Time machine I won’t have any backups until end of August at the earliest when they do an upgrade. Though it Time machine is wonky maybe I’ll set aside a drive and Carbon Copy Cloner as an extra backup. I LOVE that software.

  2. I rarely brick myself, Del, but having just one functioning drive with 20 years of geekiness on it after the Lion upgrade + Time Machine death was a tad . . . nervy (my 3 year old Super Duper clone drive decided to die the same day . . . smashing).

Party, did you say? But where . . . Blighty or Stateside (do we have any others? Weren’t you in Oz for a while, Steve? Or did I just make that up so we all sounded a bit more cosmopolitan and a bit less nerdy?)?

Hang on, how about at John’s ‘crib’? He can pay our air fares, surely? What with his high media profile and consequent backhander takery.

  3. BroMu,

I wish I was in Oz. Never been. Hardly ever left the States. (I get lost easily.)

We could party in international waters, and do whatever we wanted.

  4. Let’s play Pirates, well TLAPD is coming up.

Second thoughts, know someone who is employed to keep pirates at bay, with a machine gun.

  5. A guy from work went on one of those cruises off the unsavory parts of asia where you are guaranteed to be attacked by pirates. The cruise outfits you with weapons and you get to shoot/kill real pirates.

He had to pay $$$ to go on that cruise. I declined to see pics so I can’t speak to what sort of action they saw.

  6. You wuss, Ace. Look what fun they all had in ‘Hard Target’.

    I’ll bring the ridiculously flamey-explosive nut-cracking grenades.

  7. Based on my admittedly brief Internet search, no it’s not the same.

Ace, BroMu, and I are referring to the actual on-foot (i.e., old-fashioned) method of stalking prey.

  8. I may have to put you on the silly step, Steve.

Hurling homonyms onto this board is like sloshing teenage offal into a shark pen.

  9. BroMu,
It isn’t teenage offal that is going into the shark pen but male honeymooners, well their arms to be exact.

Del could put together something to keep the sharks away, ensuring safer swimming.

  10. I used to swim in a shark cage all the time, but that soon became tedious. Now I just wear an amulet bearing the likeness of Pierre-Yves Cousteau, and the sharks don’t bother me anymore.

  11. Apology accepted, Captain Stever….

Nxxx, I would claim to be shocked at your callous and highly inappropriate comment, but as we’re British I clearly find it most amusing.

PS: Whitewash, eh? I certainly didn’t see 4-0 at the start of the series.

  12. I’m not supposed to spread this around, but Steve is supposed to help me come up with slick new packaging and form factors for my critters!

  13. Well I’m back after a week spent doing ultimately futile keynote tutorials for my physicists. Haven’t really fired up my Mac-themed websites for a few days.

Sooo . . . did I miss anything momentous in the world of Apple?

  14. I am no officially lioned….. and I’m hating it. URGGGHHH
Had to turn off Automatic Graphic Switching as it was causing my lappy to lock up when it would go to sleep.

The virtual desktops are driving me crazy and randomly sending apps to limbo. Limbo where I can see them open and running when switching desktop, but can never access them again.

So far Lion is the big fat lazy cat of the OSes.

Also when rendering me down to stock I would recommend using bay leaf. It helps with the smell 🙂

  15. MacBook Pro one of the new ones with the Automatic Graphic Switching. My laptop is way more stable once I turned off the AGS in the Energy Saver Preference Pane. No more random lock ups.

What I really hate is spaces. It used to be so fast to switch between them and now there is an animation that you can’t turn off so it takes for ever to switch between them. Also you can’t have columns for spaces any more only rows which is so inefficient if you want a bunch of spaces.

I also have an issue now where spaces sometimes eats my app. I’ll have a terminal open or word or some other app and then it just disappears. It will still be running (like if I right click on terminal and tell it open a new window it will) but I can no longer switch to the desktop and use the app. It is only visible during the animation that occurs when switching spaces.

Finally Safari is now slow enough that I’ve had to give it up for most things and move to Firefox or Chrome.

I’m guessing if I could have done a clean install instead of the App store upgrade it probably wouldn’t be so flaky, but I can say I’m not thrilled yet. So far no features that I see as an improvement over my SL.

  16. Del,

Thanks for the account of your troubles with Lion. If I weren’t still using PowerPC hardware, I’d be worrying about upgrading. It’s sad that the latest cat isn’t rocking everybody’s world.

It’s also sad that we are discussing serious technical matters here in the Giga-Post, when the world is full of wonderful sparkly things like aluminum unibody sexbots, and frozen banana cream pie.

  17. Woah woah *woah*.

I get snowed under with work for a week, come back, and you’re all talking about something . . . normal? Del, how could you. I mean, I know I started the whole Lion-moan thing . . . but surely you’re better than me?

I mean, my wife’s sick as a dawg and worrying about my daughter’s 4th birthday tomorrow for which I’ve promised I’ll get up ultra-early and help her prepare despite having been kept up till 0430 yesterday by my muppet of a 2 year-old son. Yet here I am, back on CARS at nearly midnight. And I’m *still* planning to look at the rants on MDN and piss-takery on The Register (UK) before I even think about going a-bo-bo’s.

    I am a *bad person*.

    Del, you have a chance . . . don’t lose your way . . . let me sleep . . . just let me sleep…
