  1. We didn’t really have a Solar eclipse because instead we had a Puffy Stuff That Darkens The Sky And Weeps Water eclipse instead.

    Like every other buggering day.

    . . .

I’m not sure the expression ‘buggering day’ won’t elicit some further comment on such a sophisticated board as this. And possibly suggestions for annual celebration.

And yes, I *was* really careful how I typed that last bit.

  2. Celebrate any way you like. Who am I to judge?

Besides, it triggered a page jump, so everybody wins!

And since my command of British slang is woefully inadequate, would “bloody day” have been more apropos? (Ignoring the further comments *that* would solicit.)

  3. I considered ‘bloody’, Steve, but discarded it in favour of setting up the smut (which is surely the motto of the mega-post).

And rumours have it that the British slang quotient over the pond is about to rocket due to the Blighty-born chuckle-chimp who’s about to start hosting The Late Late Show.

  4. My use of slang is usually far off the mark, and pegs me as one who is out of touch with current trends. For that reason I am better served by slang I’ve made up out of nothing, or highly anachronistic slang, like something from the Century of the Fruitbat.

  5. Now I’m really depressed. I’ve just bought a fruitbat as a pet and now I’ve got to hang about for another hundred years looking after the bloody thing.

  6. In regard to the kerfluffle discussing which book about Steve Jobs tells the truest story, I direct you to the product marketing, remembered from my youth:
    “It’s a breath mint!”
    “It’s a candy mint!”
No, it’s “Two, two, two mints in one!”

  7. As ever, Ace breathes sweet sanity into the fetid funkiness of keynote-related kerflufflery.

    In other news:

    “Murray mints, Murray mints . . .”

[C’mon Nxxx, you know you want to . . .]

  8. Is it just me, or was it a really strange decision on Apple’s part to make Siri sound like Ghostface from the ‘Scream’ movies? And answer every query with ‘What’s your favourite scary movie?’

  9. I think it would be great if they could get Samuel L. Jackson to replace Siri. He could cuss you out when you miss a turn on directions or when you don’t respond to an email or other notification in a timely manner.

  10. I tried tunnelling out with a spoon, but got distracted when hitting a particularly rich seam of long-congealed Pudding-over-IP experiments.

  11. Apparently, the Pudding-over-IP has worked so well that it has incapacitated BroMu. Anybody got a spoon?

  12. I have a shovel…

I took a sample over to the assay office, and they said it was “fool’s pudding.”

    Still tasty, though.

  13. Siri, if time travel is possible, where are the tourists from the future hiding? Not one of the people around here looks all that futuristic.

  14. Or maybe building a time travel machine destroys the world.

    Bwah hah hah haaaaa.

That’s why I stopped working on it and concentrated on the ‘bots instead. Honest.

  15. Cousins. Please forgive any signs of incipient or actual insanity on this side of the pond as we are being subjected to hustings.

Any tips on how to escape politicians? Can we borrow Tom Paine please?

  16. BroMu – Professional courtesy acknowledged.

Question for our Cousins: Do you prefer the spelling “gray” or “grey”? (This came up in the context of some new business cards.)

  17. Grey business cards? Whatever happened to ‘Eggshell with Romalian type’, my American friend?

  18. We in the US have the privilege of choosing from all the legitimate spellings. As a graphic designer, I lean toward specifying per the Pantone number, but if forced to name the color would choose “greigh” because it doesn’t have any alliegences. Or prior history of use.

  19. The spelling isn’t important to me, at least for this matter (gray or otherwise). More of an idle intellectual curiosity. (Said with full knowledge of the risk of calling anything around here “intellectual.”)

  20. Nxxx,

That depends on which meaning of barnet I’m supposed to grok in this context. (Thank you, dictionary.com)

  21. I wear my hair grey to honour my badger.

    With black stripes.

Like a like a lightly soiled Newcastle shirt.

As I suspect so many will be as the season nears its end.

  22. BroMu,

A serious question, wren’t they all on this board?

Can one drink Broon and Fed without wearing a Newcastle shirt, soiled or not?

  23. I fear not, Nxxx. It’s like wearing a Montague’s shirt with a Capulets cap. Or serving the Queen spam. We should not tamper with the Ways of the World.

For our Colonial Cousins, normal service will doubtless be resumed soon. Certainly I have a lame comment about farts brewing (well . . . that’s pretty much it, to be honest).

  24. Please, do not curtail your local references for my benefit. They add a patina of quaintness to the proceedings.

I don’t have a lot of quaint local color to give you. Although there is the fellow here in Portland, Oregon, known for playing the bagpipes with flames shooting out the drones, while wearing a kilt and riding a unicycle.

  25. Ace,

We have some more to export from Croydon and would be glad to supply them gratis Trust you will have no problems with the “A Souvenir from the SNP” signs.

  26. If I would have known you were looking for souvenirs, I would have picked up a few things on my drive across the country.

(Seriously, I did drive across the country. Relocating to Silicon Valley. Not working for that fruit company we occasionally refer to.)
