LONG LIVE THE MEGA-POST!
You should be able to view it again, but Masako had to shut off the comments at…
3821.
She had to delete one spam comment to get it viewable again (link).
Please, let’s hear a big round of applause for all of you who posted in the Mega-Post and kept it alive for a year and four months. Please use this comment thread to post your fondest memories of the post with the most…
the Mega-Post.
Does ‘prëtzels’ have an umlaut?
Not yet, but there is a petition to add one, as well as a circumflex and a breve.
Guessing time!
Which will happen first? We hit 7000 comments or this post turns 10 years old?
And if we game it correctly, both may happen on the same day. Not that we’d ever try anything silly like that…
A “breve” on this side of the pond is a long note although we usually only use semibreves as the longest.
Will the pitch and length of the note change the meaning of the word or phrase?
Only in Chinese.
I’m quite unembarrassed to say that Steve’s observation regarding the potential simultaneity of our two big landmarks is by far the most butt-quiveringly exciting thing that has happened to me this week.
Which goes some considerable distance to explaining my continued presence here.
Hmm, a little more than a month to post a little over 100 comments? I’m a little surprised that we have done so little for so long, but not that we have so little to show for it.
Being innumerate, does this spoil Steve’s plan?
Nxxx, don’t think about the numbers. Just post comments regularly, and it should work out all right. The quality shouldn’t matter, as it never has before.
Just like this, in fact.
Just like this, in fact.
You sure this is okay?
Well no-one’s stopping us.
Just like this, in fact.
Remind me to stack comments when we get close to our goal in lieu of posting something that requires additional thought. I’m running low on functional brain cells.
Again, remind me to stack comments when we get close to our goal in lieu of posting something that requires additional thought. I’m running low on functional brain cells.
I certainly will, Ace.
How about you, Nxxx?
And Steve?
And . . .
And we’ve lost Del to I-don’t-want-to-know-what critters are now lurking the tunnels.
I find that if I stack comments, they eventually overbalance and fall over.
Do I need stronger glue?
Just do that Michael Jackson magic lean thing. That should work.
I’m not desperate enough to stack comments yet. I’ll wait until there is a crisis.
In the mean time let me say that, after reading comments from the early pages of this thread, we now lack a certain silliness or abandon. The youngsters like Del, Psyko, and their clan have apparently found something useful to do with their not inconsiderable talents, and are not likely to crawl back here until their mortgages are paid off and their children have left the nest. By then, I will be a dim memory–a footnote in the histories of lightweight long threads.
And my avatar will have melted as a result of global or local warming.
Apparently 50 is the new 40, Ace. And 40 the new 30. Which leaves me pondering what 10 is.
And as for silliness, let me just say I’m writing this while wearing my cravat at a jaunty, devil-make-care angle, and leave it at that.
I think I’ve made my point.
Although, if you’re still at a loss for just how whacky I am, I have a 15 minute powerpoint presentation prepared that will explain the fine detail.
BroMu, since your presentation is less than 18 minutes in length, I think you my have a TED Talk in the makings. Let me know when the video is posted on the web, and I will pop up some popcorn, and invite some friends over for a party.
How would we tl;dr all these comments?
“Some stuff was said. Some funny, some not. Intermixed with long periods of silence and/or inactivity. People arrived and departed.”
That’s like the ‘War and Peace’ of the Gigapost.
And I refuse to lower myself by talking to that rude bear, Ace. Anyone who thinks hanging out with Marky Mark (and no doubt his ‘Funky Bunch’ also) is cool is no friend of mine.
BroMu,
How about:
?
!
Steve asked, “Which will happen first? We hit 7000 comments or this post turns 10 years old?”
I think that we will hit 7000 comments first. Heck, I could achieve that without help from my friends. Hitting that number on the date of the anniversary will require some restraint, as someone might be tempted by the glory of being the deed-doer.
And by “someone,” you mean the four of us and whatever number of lurkers there are out there. Or, to borrow a movie quote: “The Four Horsemen now have a riding companion.”
Sometimes I am a lurker, sometimes a lurkee. It depends on whether I have anything of substance to offer, which is usually not the case.
But today I have one word of advice: solarpoweredsexbots.
Unfortunately Nxxx and I live in the UK, Ace, so soloarpoweredsexbots would only work fleetingly. Although in retrospect that might actually harmonise with my own . . . limitations.
Well, they are working on a rain-powered version for the Lake District…
I can’t think of a single answer to that that doesn’t descend into using the words ‘wet, ‘moist’ or ‘crevice’ . . . and I simply will not tarnish our high-brow blog with such tawdry smut.
Steve, if you could do the honours . . .
The Giga-Post is now needing 100 able-bodied comments to fulfill the commitment to hit the magic 7000 mark by the anniversary date. Get the lead out, people!
I’m still waiting for Steve to say something smutty.
This must be some kind of record.
Unless he’s otherwise engaged writing the script for the next generation of Carry On movies.
Now living in Silicon Valley with the horrible drought, I don’t want to waste even water metaphors.
Would it help if I told you we’ve just had five days of solid rain over here in Blighty?
I’m actually wrining out my keyboard as I type this.
Hey, why have I been anonymised again!
You? Why, it could be anyone now, couldn’t it?
But if you say so…
Been out of commission for a fortnight.
Anything happened?
Yes, it was all over the news: “Nxxx out of commission!” “What does this mean for what he does?” “Who is the next Nxxx?”
Famous at last!
Hmmm… one week to post 90 comments. More than ten per day–what on earth is there to say?
By Jove, I’ve got it!
Since everything is permissible on the Giga-Post, I will post two limericks from Isaac Asimov!
Upon high Olympus, great Zeus
Muttered angrily, “Oh, what the deuce!
It takes spiced ambrosia
To get the nymphs cosier
And Hera supplies grapefruit juice.”
“We refuse,” said two men from Australia,
“Bestiality this saturnalia.
For now, we bethink us,
The ornithorhynchus
Is our down-under type of Mammalia.”
Hey, this is more fun than stacking! Here’s another one:
The haughty philosopher, Plato
Would unbend to a sweet young tomato.
Though she might be naive
Like you wouldn’t believe
He would patiently show her the way to.
(said in a stoner voice): Those are deep, man!
Oh, and without someone cheating (i.e., faking it), it seems unlikely that both things will happen at the same time. Which might be reflective of some people’s reality.
There was a nun from Chichester
Whose form made the Saints in their niches stir
One morning at Matins
The heat from her satins
Made even the Bishopric’s britches stir
Hang on . . . who’s keeping a running total? We don’t want to peak too early. That would just be embarrassing. And certainly not keeping things ‘fresh and edgy’. Apparently.
Checking the count at the top of the page, we can see where we stand: still more than eighty to go at the moment. If we proceed at our normal pace, we will fall short. If any lurkers decide to jump in, we could shoot past quickly. My plan is simply to trudge along, and if the count is far short the day before, I will set my alarm for sometime September 9th so as not to sleep entirely throught the day. Then if I have nothing to say of importance, I will draw upon my store of limericks, recipes, and sports reportage to make up any deficit. I will not hesitate to stack comments if necessary, as it’s all for a noble purpose.
