The Mega-Post is Dead

LONG LIVE THE MEGA-POST!

You should be able to view it again, but Masako had to shut off the comments at…

3821.

She had to delete one spam comment to get it viewable again (link).

Please, let’s hear a big round of applause for all of you who posted in the Mega-Post and kept it alive for a year and four months. Please use this comment thread to post your fondest memories of the post with the most…

the Mega-Post.

  1. Right, I’ve done what I can. Bo-Bo’s calls over here in Blighty. Good luck Ace and Steve. We’re counting on you now.

  2. Probably partying at one of those posh SF after-Apple-event affairs—playing with his new iPad Pro, with an Apple Pencil parked behind his ear.

  3. I lied about the bo-bo’s. I just sneaked back out of bed to see how we were getting on. Don’t worry, I didn’t wake Steve.

    . . .

What I meant was ‘I hope someone wakes Steve’. You know, so he can start posting.

  4. There is a remote possibility that he is lurking in the shadows while the serfs do the grunt-work, waiting until the last minute so as to jump in and claim the 7000th comment without breaking a sweat.

  5. Another possibility is that it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of life whether the 7000th comment arives on the tenth anniversary of the beginning of this post.

  6. It would be tragic (in a small way—not a truly tragic way) if a spam comment won the day. If such a thing really happens, you can bet that I will blubber in my beer for hours.

  7. …it appears that the time stamp from the server is on GMT. So, technically, the anniversary is over as of two+ hours ago.

  8. On the other hand, we on the west coast of US still have four more hours to count as September 9th, so victory is sort of within reach.

  9. And regardless of the time stream, some lucky person will yet have the 7000th post so long as the server doesn’t melt down…

  10. And I thought the “esteemed” Mr. Moltz was (is?) also on Pacific US time, so we should still have a few more hours (2:34 or so).

  11. I apologize for the delay in my posting today. While I work in Sunnyvale (for those not familiar with Silicon Valley geography, that’s north of Cupertino), I did not attend the event in San Francisco today. Heard about some things that some people didn’t seem to be overly impressed with, but haven’t yet digested the full details.

  12. And it has been y’all who have been carrying the yeoman’s burden on keeping this post alive. I haven’t been here all that long.

(Going to attempt a random dive into the comments to get an idea of when I started. Be back soon. Unless I’m eaten by a grue (or worse).)

  13. It looks like my first addition here was back on page 64, on 29 November 2008.

Other highly-active posters included Del, Psyko, blank, and Streetrabbit.

Have they popped by to send birthday wishes? Or have they forgotten?

  14. My tardiness this evening was due to the fact that I’m having this new place painted, and was engaged in the otherwise pointless exercise of moving items from one room to another, to facilitate the professionals.

Or in “American:” I was moving lots of $#!@ around.

  15. Ace, are you still online? Only two more comments to go. And since the clock is on GMT, our cousins might wake early to try to sneak in.

  16. OK. I looked over the shiny new gadgets that came out today. Since I’m getting close to desperately needing a new laptop (this one is not quite as old as this post), I wonder if the super-jumbo-mega sized iPad plus a keyboard would be sufficient. Any suggestions?

  17. Well, it’s getting late, and I don’t feel like sitting in front of the computer all night.

    So…. 7000th!!

I tried looking up the post with the most comments, and one of them (about folks confessing dark secrets on Reddit) has over 40,000 comments. So we’ll never reach that.

But I couldn’t find anything about the oldest continuously active post/comments.

Ten years is a remarkable achievement. Let’s give ourselves some applause.

Now if we could only get pudding over IP and sexbots, we’d be all set.

  18. Congratulations Steve, on scoring the 7,000th!

Ours may not be the longest thread, but it may be the longest one with tunnels, iFlames, sexbots, space travel, ninja kittens, cricket, and haiku.

It really has gone downhill with the departure of the elite members you mention. If they, and Moltz, had not “gotten a life,” it would be going strong, I’m sure. Perhaps Apple going so mainstream has put us pirates out of business,

  19. Sorry I was unable to help, Hospital appointment and an interrogation by the pharmacist confirmed my wimpiness, as I should have helped.

Will we get a mention from The Honourable Mr. Moltz, id est him who I supplied a copy of The Guardian when CARS received a mention in the IT section?

  20. Congratulation one and all (not least Nxxx’s proctologist?). Excellent squatting by Ace and Steve to get us there.

We truly are awesome: a veritable cornucopia of dark secrets and even darker surprises, as we would surely all agree.

    *Especially* Nxxx’s proctologist.

Now if you’ll just excuse me I have some work to do.

  21. From our benevolent CARS overlord, via Twitter (after I wished the Giga-Post a happy 10th):

“Thanks for remembering the important things in life.”

  22. I ate it. In remembrance of him.

And then had a couple of Mars bars in remembrance of the Entity/Jennifer-Fricking-Connelly and Masako et al.

  23. Sorry I haven’t said anything lately, but there is so little oxygen in the atmosphere here at 7000+ that I passed out. I may have to invest in SCUBA equipment, or whatever the modern equivalent is.

  24. I’ve been recovering by having my children walk behind me whispering ‘Thou art mortal’.

Although it sounds more like ‘Thou fat porker’ the way they do it.

And they say the Classics are dead.

  25. Since they’re behind you, you could fart in their general direction. That might at least place them out of earshot.

  26. Chaps,
It seems that someone called Trump is making waves on your side of the Pond. Do you think you could recruit him to the Mega-Post? If you can, we will reciprocate with an attempt to recruit Jeremy, who has a worst fashion sense than mine.

post script:-If you are successful, can I claim the hair please?.

  27. I suspect that “the Donald,” as he is often called, would find our meager venue too trifling for his aims, which are all about bigness and greatness and money and America, and Donald Trump and Donald Trump and Donald Trump. Or so I’ve heard.

  28. I had nothing to do with that, even though we’re both originally from New Jersey.

Nor Letterman. But Colbert is a very limber individual, even in the suit (if you’ve seen him jumping around during the show open, you know what I mean).
