You should be able to view it again, but Masako had to shut off the comments at…

She had to delete one spam comment to get it viewable again (link).
Please, let’s hear a big round of applause for all of you who posted in the Mega-Post and kept it alive for a year and four months. Please use this comment thread to post your fondest memories of the post with the most…
the Mega-Post.
No, I cannot.
It’s a marketing gimmick.
Not surprised—just thought you might have some special insight. I did a little research and found some other nicknames for New Jersey: The Crossroads of the Revolution,The Tomato State, and The Armpit of America. All perfectly good marketing names…
Surely it’s ‘The *Yard* State’?
I’ve never heard the word used ‘garden’ in any Hollywood blockbusters, which are my sole source of insight into US culture. Excepting Kanye lyrics, of course.
As Nxxx well knows, I live in the so-called ‘Garden of England’. And believe me, it ain’t all rosy dahn mi way.
Ace,
Each of those nicknames could apply to a specific portion of the state.
Let me guess—you come from the Tomato State!
And of Gravesend I know little more than that Sacagawea was buried there.
Croydon is apparently derived from Crocus Valley. Some idiots/worthy citizens are planting multi thousand bulbs in an attempt to recapture the Saffron Market.
Is this The Yellow Peril?
Poor Pocohontus. First the ignomy of interment in Gravesend. Now some Saca sledger has stolen her memorial statue. Woe.
Seriously, Nxxx. Crocus Valley?
Are they painted on the tarmac and concrete or something?
Ace, I grew up in the “armpit” portion. The “what exit?” joke applies, since that’s how most people can find the place. Though if my recollection of the town’s history is correct, it was a bunch of farms in the 1860s.
Steve,
Did your farms grow crocuseseseseseses?
Where I grew up was also a bunch of farms in the 1860s. Farming was very popular back then, before supermarkets. I believe it had something to do with food. Nowadays around here it’s more about drink.
We are truly joined by a common culture.
Probably the same bacteria they put into yogurt…
Or ‘Hi Gurt’, as we say over here (to Gurt . . . when he can be arsed showing up, of course. Tsh).
Damn it Bro Mu, it is obvious you are not a Sloane Ranger but we must keep up appearances before these Colonials or I’ll send the boys round to give you a good slapping.
That sounds like a job for Disgusted Colonel Retired, if he hasn’t actually retired.
I tried being a Sloane Ranger but didn’t have the teeth for it.
Unlike the Colonel.
Now if you’ll just excuse me I’m about to go and top myself as a result of England blowing the rugby this evening and hence, in all probabilty, becoming the first host nation ever to get binned in the first round.
BroMu,
Sympathy but it’s good to be Welsh and have Scottish and Irish friends, well for the time being.
I knew that would draw you out of you biker grove.
Wales deserved it, we didn’t. Sound familiar?
Ugh.
I feel I may be snuggling up to my Irish ancestors sometime soon.
Confusion here in Croydon as when people talk about “The Eagles”, you have to work out whether they are referring to the USA rugby team or Crystal Palace soccer team.
The idea of a USA rugby team is new to me. The only benefit to me from rugby so far is the word “scrum” to use when playing Scrabble.
Nxxx,
By “The Eagles,” you could also mean:
– the professional football team from Philadelphia
– the college teams from Boston College
– the 1970s band
It still is confusing on this side of the pond.
Or surely Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards?
If eagles could only fly as high as Eddie Edwards, they’d have been extinct aeons ago.
Guys,
As you were so helpful in teaching us Brits how to pronounce Yosemite, what is the correct pronunciation of El Capitan.
Is it El Capitan or El Capitan please?
I thought it was ‘El Capitan’?
I don’t know about Steve, but I usually pronounce it ‘El Capitan’ unless I subconsciously want to impress the people I’m with. For example, if I am at a reggae concert, I might slip into a Jamaican patois: ‘El Capitan.’ Or if I am surrounded by a crowd of surly gun-totin’ Texans, I might try to blend in by saying ‘El Capitan’ with a drawl. They usually see right through that, however.
On a good day, I’m lucky if I can speak understandable English, let alone the King’s English, Jamacian patois, or a southern drawl.
I just know that the newish OS would break my aging MacBook.
Doubtless goaded by the Risen Spirit of Steve, for some reasonI always salute when saying it. And click my heels. And put on a rather impressive false moustache.
My impressive moustache is not false and neither is my urinate offedness as my printer manufacturers haven’t written any drivers for El Capitan, however you pronounce it, yet.
Wouldn’t have happened under that Nippiness bird.
Those bastards! If I knew in which of the multitude of buildings the responsible people worked (they’re really all over the place; just noticed another one today at lunch time), I would rattle them for you.
Hooray!
In a statement about El Capitan, the printer manufacturer has promised a driver for my model by late October. In the meantime , have acquired two monks for copying purposes. Unfortunately they are insisting on food and shelter as well as extensive supplies of gold leaf and special paints and making incoming emails that need distributing, resemble The Book of Kells.
Advice please.
Don’t feed the monks rich food or wine–that will just encourage them. Give them india ink and a goose quill before locking them in. If they slack off, threaten them with Celine Dion recordings.
Watch out also if the word ‘catamite’ enters into proceedings. Even if only etymologically.
Bit worried.
Monks keep chanting “Form a circle.”
Oh *my*!
I would be worried too, especially since it’s a bit difficult for two people to form a circle.
I skipped the two monks and went with an infinite number of monkeys typing on typewriters. The only problem: too much Shakespeare and not enough Douglas Adams.
Depends on how robust your mangle is, Steve?
That’s not a euphemism, by the way.
Or is it?
I get so confused around here.
Maybe I should just keep typing and hpe for the best . . .
‘o’ dear.
Wish the Colonel Retd. was still around,
He had a cure for every problem.
Did he unretire?
Maybe he’s no longer disgusted.
It would be ironic if he had been taken out and shot at dawn by mistake…
Brother have written the driver and it works.
Tried to sack the monks but that are asking for redundancy payment. A legal friends tells me that as they do not have a contract and even if they did, they were only employed, if at all, for less than the minimum period.
Do not understand any of it except the form a circle part, so
HELP!
Surely that should be ‘Brother *has* written the driver’?
And you’re welcome.
Although now I have access to you printer, so . . . you know . . .
My printer has “Brother” written on it, but I’m not sure of the significance.
Mine says “Canon,” which may have to do with my appreciation of Baroque music.
Ace,
Does that make you a Church Official?
If it does, please pass the collection plate.
My printer has a load of crap written on it.
Actually that’s not strictly true. More properly it writes a load of crap.
It’s my Mac that has a load of crap written on it.
Sounds like an error in the human-computer interaction…
