The Mega-Post is Dead

LONG LIVE THE MEGA-POST!

You should be able to view it again, but Masako had to shut off the comments at…

3821.

She had to delete one spam comment to get it viewable again (link).

Please, let’s hear a big round of applause for all of you who posted in the Mega-Post and kept it alive for a year and four months. Please use this comment thread to post your fondest memories of the post with the most…

the Mega-Post.

  1. Working on the assumption we might get our long longed for ‘bots’ up and running, I’ll take all the ‘interaction’ I can get. Whichever way I can get it.

  2. “Up and running.”

That’s part of the problem. Every time I uncrate the latest model, it up and runs away. Asimov’s robot laws are out of order around here.

  3. Send me the latest version, if you can catch it, and I’ll uncrate it at the “Steve Jobs” film and report on the outcome.

  4. I notice that it has been a long while since Sue has paid a visit. Our forum might not be as friendly as it ought, so I’m going to put tea and cake out to see if that entices her or some other gentle soul to stop by.

  5. Hey, where did it go? I put the tea and cake on that wrought-iron table by the gate to the tunnel. Now, just crumbs and an upended cup! Do we have a raccoon infestation?

  6. ‘I big fat raccoon’?

Clearly I meant ‘*A* big fat raccoon’.

The former was in no way a Freudian slip.

  7. At no point did I get the idea you were a raccoon, nor did I think you would raid the tea and cake. A tipped-over cup is not the sort of wanton disregard of decorum that I expect from a habitue of the UK.

    An Australian or American, perhaps.

Maybe even Sue, if she were drunk.

If there had been some empty rum bottles strewn about, I’d suspect Del.

  8. Cousins,
I need to get this right.

May we previous rulers from this side of the pond, wish you a Happy Thanksgiving which we believe is Thursday 26th November and the weekend.

Where help is needed is with Black Friday. Who, what and where do we paint things black?

  9. Nxxx, as long as you don’t require your assistants to be at work at 5am to help you paint, you’ll get no complaints here.

I see that Del hasn’t shown up yet, but it looks like the tunnels may have begun to leak (some spammers spotted via the main page). I dare not look for myself. That whole fear of being eaten by a grue, etc.

  10. Nxxx, as I will be traveling by air shortly, federal regulations prohibit me from carrying much in the way of condiments and most definitely no sharp objects. Other than my wits. In which case, I’m doomed.

  11. I was Doomed the other night, Steve. When watching the film of the same name. I’ll never look at allegedly classy Oscar-nominee and Bond-ex Rosamund Pike in quite the same way again. Not least because of the bug-eyed melodramatic way she was looking at me for what seemed like a *lot* longer than 90 minutes.

  12. Don’t encourage him, Ace.

Although if you want to suggest I get stuffed on turkey, I’m more than amenable.

Not get stuffed *in* Turkey, of course. I’m the wrong nationality.

    And altitude.

  13. Ace, I left my comments in my “home” computer which did not make the trip, as did my “work” computer. (Since the Boss was kind enough not to mind that I was absent from the office for a few extra days, I really did need to work. Tragic as that is.)

They really ought to make these computers lighter, such that I could carry two on the airplane. Betwixt all the time spent on Pudding over IP and sexbots, I’m sure this is far down the list.

  14. I don’t have a portable compter such as the laptop style, or notebook style. I make my comments from home using my 27″ iMac, on the go using my iPhone 5, or surreptitiously from work using some variety of Windows PC. I’m sure that accounts for the uneven quality of my comments.

  15. I don’t actually have a computer. I write my comments on a post-it, then fold it up rillyrilly small and jam it in a wall socket.

God knows how they end up here.

    But I suspect witchcraft.

  16. BroMu,

Could you try that with pudding? Since they’re still working on Pudding over IP, this might be the closest thing.

  17. Christmas Pudding went in but did it emerge ay your end? Tried custard but 230 vote makes my arm tingle. Maybe it will work on your 110 volt system. Looking forward to your reports.

  18. I tried pudding, Steve, but . . . well, it didn’t work out too well. Not too well at all.

But your sockets look like piggy snouts, so maybe you’ll have more success when attempting to inject pudding-packets into the mains?

  19. That’s my problem! I forgot to packetize the pudding first! But if I purchase small enough bags on Amazon, I am a bit concerned what other items they will recommend…

  20. I always order small *and* large from Amazon, then swap the ‘contents’ so my wife remains blissfully ignorant (but mightily impressed).

  21. Isn’t Amazon a river and do they only deliver to the nearest river or flood area?

BTW Just seen the Simpson’s episode where on a rolling news programme, Steve Jobs invents iGhost appeared. The following day, Homer bought a Mapple book. How many centuries are we behind you, Cousins?

  22. Nxxx, we mustn’t conflate Amazon and Amazon. Things are confused enough as it is. And then there are the women warriors…

  23. We’re ahead of you on that one, Ace. Maggie was ’79. You’re only just gearing up for a possible Clinton 2.0.

  24. Apparently, the druggies have become too numerous lately. My response to Nxxx has been held “awaiting moderation” mayhaps because it includes links.

  25. By the way, while I’m here, does anyone remember what the subject of the Mega Post piece was? I wonder if I could find it. I have the WordPress export somewhere. Maybe it would import and work now.

Wouldn’t that be a Christmas miracle?

  26. Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, John.

Sorry no longer read the Guardian so no more mentions of CARS in British press.

Just realised you will need to have a Prosperous New Year to pay for the Mega Post.

    Thanks.

  27. Mr. Moltz,

You’re in luck, if your definition of luck is very broad.

A long time ago, I exported the entire Mega-Post to a text file of 3944 pages. Here is the first page:

Jeez, this place is going to be on fire when we come back, isn’t it.

  28. Hmm. So, does anyone remember how many comments there were? I was able to restore the Movable Type export which apparently I did in 2005. It has 1,060 comments which almost seems like too few. Although, the last was on 8/4/2004 so if I did the MT to WP migration in 2005, that should be all of them. Anyway, take a look. I can turn comments back on if we have consensus this is everything.

When I exported the text of the Mega-Post in January of 2008, there were in excess of 3900, I believe. Here is the last comment (cricket reportage, I regret to note) in that file:

Mohammad Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed took the chance for batting practice as Bangladesh drew their game against a Sri Lanka Development XI in Colombo.

Ashraful top scored with 87, which included a six and 11 fours in his 87, while all-rounder Aftab made 67.

Bangladesh had trailed by 217 on first innings but batted through the final day to reach 273-6.

The first of two Tests begins on Monday with the tourists looking to atone for a 3-0 defeat in the one-day series.

And they were relieved to avoid defeat in their warm-up fixture after a difficult few days which saw spinner Mohammad Rafique fined after a row with coach Dav Whatmore and paceman Mashrafe bin Mortaza ruled out by back trouble.
