The Mega-Post is Dead

LONG LIVE THE MEGA-POST!

You should be able to view it again, but Masako had to shut off the comments at…

3821.

She had to delete one spam comment to get it viewable again (link).

Please, let’s hear a big round of applause for all of you who posted in the Mega-Post and kept it alive for a year and four months. Please use this comment thread to post your fondest memories of the post with the most…

the Mega-Post.

  1. John, looking at the last comment in your restored post, and the last comment in my exported text, we can see that at least thirteen months’ worth of comments are missing from your export. You can see that the date of that final cricket comment is the same as the date you proclaimed “The Mega-Post is Dead.”

I am willing to email the text of the entire Mega-Post to you if you like, and to any other interested parties. Just provide an email address to which I can send it.

  2. Yeah, crap. It’s possible the old Movable Type export simply crapped out at 1,060 and they are lost forever. I’ll poke around some more. I would hope I saved a copy of the old MT database but…

  3. Esteemed Mr. Moltz,

Had I known that my comment would have been so expeditiously approved, I would have rejoiced.

Alas, I moved on to other things, possibly this construct referred to as “real life” instead of staring at my computer.

I am glad to know that you still exist. And that you care about us. Thank you.

    Good tidings, etc.

  4. Sorry, what are the rest of you talking about? I was too busy googling that archival cricket stuff. While drinking tea. And munching on a slice of Battenberg (the cake, not the aristocrats).

    Jolly good show!

  5. Not sure about the others, but I was talking about the (so far) full life cycle of the post that became known as the Mega-Post. It remains one of the oddest pieces of literature that I’ve read. I hardly know what to make of it. It logged a large number of comments over a relatively short time span, and while it choked on its success it remains the spiritual parent of this thread we have been spinning ever since (albeit more and more slowly…).

  6. Ace, I can’t locate it. I think it was before my time in these here parts of the InterWebs (yet another act of stupidity and ignorance by me). Is it accessible? I tried looking, but found nothing.

  7. Ahhhh, those were the days. I was absent from CARS for some of it because my link to the main site died and I thought CARS was no more; in fact it was just trying to connect to a dead page, somehow (John filled me in on the details when I eventually found you all again, but I can’t remember them now because they didn’t have the words ‘chocolate’ and ‘pie’ in them to embed the rest in my memory). Shame it didn’t get to 1066, eh?

  8. BroMu,

It got way past 1066: at least as far as 3821. It’s just that Mr. Moltz’ export/import process lost more than half of it. As I mentioned a few days ago, I have a text copy of the entire thing, and I’m willing to share.

    I understand if you don’t believe me…

  9. Ace,

In the words of a certain Simpson: “D’oh!” I should have seen that link. Apologies for making you work.

Now if I could find a few dozen hours to read all of it. Is it like Game of Thrones, but with Internet?

  10. I have read a lot of the Mega-Post, but have never seen the Game of Thrones. Do I need a television set for that?

  11. Or a DVD player. Or you can read the books! (In case you’ve forgotten, books are portable collections of words printed on dead, pulped up trees.)

  12. Hey, it just occurred to me that I could watch movies and such on my Mac since I have an optical drive attached. With no ads! It’s a Festivus miracle!

  13. So . . . do you put the book *in* the optical drive, Steve? Is that why it’s called optical; because it can read?

I never had these difficulties with the tape deck attached to my trusy old Commodore CBM 3032.

  14. I think it was fax tape, judging by the noises. I belive it was used to fix the communication circuits in droids.

  15. It’s Ace, so more likely to mean ‘scented gaffa for the gimp costume I keep in my Red Room of Pain ‘corection’ tape.’

Or at least that’s what we’re presumably all hoping?

  16. Have a good one Guys and Girls.

Wish you all you wish yourselves.

Was off to Stonehenge on the shortest day but was thwarted, no 16 year old virgins in Croydon.

  17. Merry, Happy, etc. to all.

May you have dreams of Pudding over IP and sexbots. Not necessarily in that order, or separately.

  18. Wishing you all a very merry, but not incendiary, Christmas, and a happy, snappy new year. This year, 2015, will forever be remembered as the year that…that… I forget.

  19. Yo ho ho everyone and thanks for the reciprocal Festivus felicitations.

I think 2016 is *definitely* going to be the year that comes straight after 2015.

  20. BroMu’s prediction is right up there with Moltz’s prediction of the iPhone having only one button (which is probably the best sarcastic prediction ever).

  21. BroMu, your thinking that 2016 is the next year in the lineup is not thinking “different.” You’re using the same kind of mathematics that was used in previous centuries, but this is the 21st century, and I’m sure we can do better. Is fuzzy math still viable? How about quantum math? If we do the math right, I think we can eliminate Donald Trump from the equation.

  22. Perhaps quantum maths will allow us to be both in 2015 and 2015 at the same time? And several other superposed chrontom dates simultaneously, depending on the superdense qubittery involved. With any luck I will manage to re-spin 1977 so I (a) don’t give up the piano and (b) put all my pocket money into Apple shares (rather than the pockets of the non-incorporated Mars family). Dammit.

And I never thought of Donald Trump as actually being in the equation; more of a negligible rounding error.

  23. Good lord. I never knew Shakespeare was the screenwriter on that.

I’d always assumed it was Beckett. Using Stoppard’s biro.

  24. Lovely so far. A bit like 2015 but more moorish. Not Moorish, obviously. Especially not if Donald gets his way.

    How are things over there?

  25. We have enough weather to go around, and the daylight slowly increases.

I woke up thinking that perhaps 2015 was just weird dream, but apparently it really happened. Maybe this is the dream.

  26. I’m not feeling anything now, Steve. The handicuffs cut circulation for far longer than antipated. Mainly because I gave the keys to my Princess Jasmine dolly and then forgot our safety word.

  27. My same word used to be ‘Harder’, but now it’s ‘Plug it in and Harder’.

    I’m into bleeding-edge tech.

  28. Had to have a look here to see if that soul-less [string of expletives deleted] person who tried to impersonate me IRL tried something here. Good to see that they haven’t. Carry on.

  29. And how, pray tell, are we to be sure that you are the person you say you are?

If John Lennon said “nothing is real” even when Strawberry Fields can be found on a tour map, now do we know you aren’t the walrus?

And what if your impersonater does a better job of being you than you? Ask Lord Greystoke how he felt when told (at the auditions for a Tarzan movie) that he wasn’t the right type for the part.

That’s all I, the real Ace Deuce, have to say on the subject at this time.

  30. Is that the first Hungarian post on this board?

    It’s like The Usual Suspects.

Literally, in the case of we Four Riders.

Bagsy me be Keyser Soze. Or that torched dude who keeps shouting Keyser’s name like a nutjob.
